In 1855, the Presidio chapel parish outgrew its first location and moved to a property on State and Figueroa Streets, where it was known as the Apostolic College of Our Lady of Sorrows. Its small chapel could not accommodate the growing parish. The following year, an adobe church was erected on an adjacent corner, known as Our Lady of Sorrows Church. Over its 75-year history, the church was relocated a number of times, suffering two major fires, and it was finally destroyed in the 1925 earthquake. The present Our Lady of Sorrows Church on Anacapa Street, dedicated in 1929, is an imposing Romanesque structure that is staffed by the Jesuit order of priests. Its acoustics are among the best in the Central/South Coast.
