Founded in 1910, the Mount Olive Missionary Baptist Church was one of the first churches to serve African-American families, and held its meetings in a small house at Ortega and Santa Barbara Streets. As with other places of worship, the 1925 earthquake demolished the original structure, which was replaced by the Second Baptist Church with its Gothic-style windows, which now has become the Church of Skatan. The St Paul Methodist Church on Haley, with his distinctive white clapboard and steeple, still serves the community.
